Paris Saint-Germain kick off the new season by winning the European Super Cup.
Paris Saint-Germain won the UEFA Super Cup after defeating Aston Villa 2-1 in a match played Wednesday evening at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg, Austria.
The Parisian team finished the first half tied 1-1, after Georgian Khvica Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring in the 20th minute. Aston Villa equalized in the 45th minute through their young player, Bryan Madjjo, aged 17, who became the youngest player to score in the history of the UEFA Super Cup.
In the second half, Paris Saint-Germain regained the lead through Désiré Doué in the 61st minute, after the referee awarded the goal following a VAR review, which overturned an initial offside decision.
The match saw Moroccan international Achraf Hakimi start and play the full 90 minutes, having only joined the team’s group training sessions two days prior.
The final brought together Paris Saint-Germain, the Champions League winner, and Aston Villa, the Europa League winner, with PSG having won the continental title for the second time in a row.
