Atletico Madrid sign Argentine Romero from Tottenham
Atletico Madrid have announced the signing of Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero on a contract until June 2031, after five seasons in north London.
The financial details of the deal were not disclosed, but British media reported it to be worth around £34.2 million ($46.27 million).
Romero, 28, bid farewell to Tottenham yesterday, saying he was leaving “with a heart full of memories and immense pride in everything we experienced and achieved together.”
Romero faced criticism at the end of last season for traveling to Argentina before Tottenham’s final league game against Everton, while the club was still battling to avoid relegation from the Premier League.
The Argentine international was part of the squad that won the 2022 World Cup and also featured in the 2026 tournament, including the final against Spain.
